HOW THE ADDITION OF THE KITCHEN ISLAND HAS TRANSFORMED THE HOME PT.1

The modern kitchen looks and feels strikingly different from the kitchens of our childhoods. According to Susan Serra, CKD (Certified Kitchen Designer), today’s kitchens are undoubtedly more masculine with understated colors, incorporating the classic black and white. The flowered wallpaper has been replaced with warm greys and light woods, and backsplashes of copper and bronze are in vogue.

While the highly industrial feel of recent years is softening, in the kitchen of 2018, form and function are on equal footing. Aesthetics and utility both play an important role, which is portrayed by the new take on the kitchen island.

The kitchen has become more than a place to cook. With today’s design emphasis on wellness, kitchen spaces are more open and bright, exuding a feeling of general well-being. The kitchen is a place to gather and to nourish our bodies and our souls, and the island accentuates this notion by providing a place of community and functionality. Islands are now getting larger, and it is also common to add more than one.

With digital connectivity in gadgets, emotional connectivity is clearly a driving force in design.

The floor plans of the 1950s were notably less open than our modern spaces. In the 1960s, women began working outside the home, making efficiency important. This need for more work space and greater convenience became the birthplace of the island. With its use also came a much-desired benefit of intimacy, as children and other family members could gather in adjacent rooms with no barriers in-between.

The social nature of the island has been critical to the staying power of this design favorite. However, with the increasingly open floor plan came the loss of storage space. Today’s island, then, is the perfect combination of form and function. Available with extra storage, built in sinks and/or ranges, their usefulness continues to increase.

The kitchen island is here to stay, so why not use it to add beauty and express your home’s personality as well? The island is versatile in design with abundant options for its surface. While wood and marble have been popular choices, a beautiful innovative option today is quartz. Caesarstone is a pioneer in the natural quartz surface market. With breakthrough designs and unique looks, a Caesarstone surface can transform your kitchen into a stylish haven where you, your family and friends can share food, drinks and happiness.
