Differentiating Essential Tremor from Parkinsonian Syndromes: The Role of DaTscan
DaTscan injection scan is used for differentiating essential tremor from tremor due to Parkinsonian syndromes. It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the active substance and iodine. Hypersensitivity reactions and thyroid accumulation have been reported following administration of the scan. It is not established as a screening or confirmatory test or for monitoring disease progression or response to therapy.
The safety and efficacy of the scan have not been established in pediatric patients. When interpreting DATscans, abnormal uptake in the putamen that is not significantly higher than background activity indicates Parkinsonism, but it cannot distinguish between different types of Parkinsonism at an individual level. In the end, DaTscan injection scan can help in differentiating essential tremor from tremor due to Parkinsonian syndromes just not at an individual level.
