Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) may seem like the same kind of cutting-edge technology. Experts are making their predictions based on the effects of each technology so far.

The Difference Between AR and VR

The main difference between AR and VR is the impression each technology gives the user. Virtual reality gives users the impression they are elsewhere as VR headsets block out all surroundings. Augmented reality, on the other hand, gives that impression that things which are not there are actually present. They add to reality, including users’ surroundings. AR glasses, holograms, and digital overlays are all examples of augmented reality.

The Impact of VR

When the first VR devices were released, they sparked curiosity among consumers. Products like the Oculus Rift were new and exciting. However, the companies that first sold VR technology did not have a lot of content to offer and the prices were steep. Plus, VR technology did not offer solutions to real-world problems so businesses were not very interested. As a result, VR’s impact on society has largely been relegated to gaming and entertainment experiences.

The Impact of AR

Microsoft Hololens, a major AR product, was developed as a part of the Mars exploration effort. Today, similar AR technologies are used to offer solutions to the needs of businesses, as well as to improve processes. For example, AR is used to train medical professionals more efficiently. AR also reaches beyond practical purposes to offer entertainment as the Pokemon Go craze demonstrates.

The benefits of AR include:

  • A virtual presence to assist others or operate equipment from afar
  • Integration of AI into technology
  • Adaptability for training, entertainment, making repairs, etc.
  • The possibility of use across multiple devices

Expert Predictions for the Future

As a result of the multiple ways that AR has adapted to offer valuable solutions and engaging content, AR has impacted many industries. Given its wide influence and adaptability, experts predict AR will improve aspects of industries like design and modeling, business logistics, tourism, classroom education and public safety.

Experts at The Tech Advocate believe that VR will incorporate more sensory and become mainstream- but not anytime soon. Meanwhile, Facebook’s VR leader believes that AR and VR will grow in tandem. Regardless of the pace or mode, it’s likely that AR and VR are going to continue to transform the way consumers and businesses operate.
