Formula 1 Says ‘Viva Las Vegas’

Formula 1 announced recently that they will be heading to Las Vegas for a night race in 2023. It’s the first time that the international racing circuit will visit Sin City since 1982.

The street circuit will take the drivers directly down the famed strip and in front of landmarks such as the Bellagio and Caesar’s Palace.

Formula 1 continues to expand its footprint in the United States, adding Las Vegas to a lineup that already includes Austin and Miami, which is making its debut in 2022. Viewership for the sport has exploded in the U.S. following the massive success of the Drive to Survive series on Netflix. ESPN saw their ratings for F1 jump 54% in 2021.

Sports and technology expert, Tod Caflisch, says this is a huge opportunity for Las Vegas to cement itself as the sports and entertainment capital of the world.

A race under the famed neon lights is certainly an exciting prospect for the growing base of F1 fans in the United States. For the city of Las Vegas, adding a marquee event like a Formula 1 race raises its profile as a place for the biggest and best sporting events in the world.

“It’s just going to be another crown jewel for them to show off as a great place to hold huge events.”

Just several years ago, Las Vegas was on the outside looking in at major professional sports. Now, the city boasts NFL and NHL franchises and is scheduled to host the Super Bowl in 2024.

The race in Las Vegas figures to be one of the hottest tickets in sports in 2023. The 2021 race at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, TX saw a record-breaking crowd of over 400,000 fans across the three-day event.
