On this new episode of SmartPower with Ioxus, host Chris Reeves sat down with uStart product consultant Dale Spencer, an industry veteran with 39 years of experience with UPS, most recently as vice president of engineering and maintenance, to discuss his former company’s unique starter needs.

New York-based Ioxus designs and manufactures smart power solutions using its ultracapacitor technology, including uStart and X-Series products.

With a delivery fleet that ranges from package vans to large aircraft, UPS has complex logistics needs that place a heavy burden on the reliability of its vehicles.

“The electrical system is completely tapped when every stop is turning the engine off and starting that vehicle up to 150 times a day,” Spencer said about his time at UPS. “And obviously the traditional automotive product was never built to perform at that level.”

Spencer and the team at UPS sought out better electrical components for its fleet’s starters and innovative maintenance methods to improve reliability. Dale began looking at ultracapacitors, but they were prohibitively expensive and not easily retrofitted to vehicles. That’s when Ioxus gave him a call that changed everything.

“What I wanted had not been built yet,” Spencer said. “They had ultracapacitors but the software and durability testing had to start.”

Ioxus teamed with UPS for development and testing on this new specified product. “That was the development of what we know today as uStart,” he said.
