India's power grid recorded demand above 270 gigawatts on May 22, 2026, during a heatwave, according to Reuters. The same report said the country's late-evening peak deficit reached about 2.57 gigawatts, citing national grid regulator Grid-India, and noted outages in cities including Chennai lasting roughly 40 minutes to an hour. India's power ministry issued a public appeal for consumers to use electricity judiciously during the period, Reuters reported.

Why evenings are the strained period

Reuters reported that daytime electricity demand in India is met partly by solar generation, while evening supply relies heavily on thermal and hydropower sources. Disha Aggarwal, a senior programme lead at the energy think tank CEEW, was quoted by Reuters saying India needs to fast-track battery storage commissioning so surplus solar generation can be used at night. Reuters also reported outages and complaints in New Delhi, Noida, and the state of Odisha during the same heatwave period.

Capacity mix versus generation mix

In an Aug. 17, 2026 commentary, Reuters columnist Gavin Maguire wrote that data from Ember and Global Energy Monitor showed India's clean energy installed capacity had reached 331.7 gigawatts, compared with 302.0 gigawatts of fossil fuel capacity, giving clean power a majority share of installed capacity for the first time. The same commentary noted that coal still accounts for roughly 70% of actual electricity generation because coal plants run continuously while solar output is intermittent. Solar capacity alone stood at 211 gigawatts as of the report, up from 0.07 gigawatts in 2010, per Ember data cited in the column. Between 2025 and mid-2026, India added 75.5 gigawatts of solar capacity compared with 3.8 gigawatts of coal capacity, according to the same Reuters commentary.

Separately, a Bloomberg India Edition newsletter published Aug. 13, 2026 described rising electricity demand in India as tied to climate-driven temperature extremes and growing power use from digital infrastructure, including data centers.
