Inside the Construction Industry: A Woman’s Perspective

Putting your foot down in a male-dominated industry isn’t always easy – just ask VCC’s Bryce Burkheart. But despite being in an industry that is 90% male, Burkheart was determined to make her voice heard. So, what was her journey like and where is she now?

On the latest episode of VCC’s Women in Construction Mini-Series for Women’s History Month, host Michelle Dawn Mooney chats with Bryce Burkheart, Project Scheduler with VCC, about her background, passions, and responsibilities working in the construction industry. The two discuss:

  • How Burkheart got into the construction industry after taking a leap of faith
  • What Burkheart’s day-to-day responsibilities look like as a former Project Engineer and now as a Project Scheduler
  • What Burkheart’s most rewarding experience has been as a woman in construction

Burkheart reflected, “The coolest part about construction is that you get to see the end result and that end result is going to be around for so many years…you go through such a difficult time on the front end…and then finally when you get there, you’re like, ‘Dang, that was cool!’ You feel proud of yourself…”

Like so many others, Burkheart started off her career not knowing exactly what she wanted to do. Before joining VCC, Burkheart worked as a business office assistant for Renaissance Women’s Center, but she knew she had more to give. After a meeting with someone in the industry, Burkheart joined VCC as an assistant project engineer and worked her way up from there. She has been with VCC for over six years, in numerous roles, but most recently as a project scheduler.
