Sounds Like Success: The Latest Trends in Airports and the Transportation Industry

Industries change and evolve. That formula is nothing new. But what happens when everything about an industry faces an upheaval due to a pandemic?

One of the industries most impacted by COVID-19 was transportation. Dave Moriarty, Senior Systems Specialist for Transportation with AtlasIED, and Olivier Savoie, International Sales Manager with AtlasIED, have seen many changes in the transportation industry over the years, but nothing quite as transformative as the past 12 months.

They spoke about those changes and the trends driving the transportation industry forward through the pandemic and beyond.

Even without a pandemic, technology is a driving factor for change in the transportation industry, and there is a lot of excitement about the innovations and solutions available.

“With the advent of 5G coming up, the artificial intelligence, the smart airport systems, it’s all moving that way,” Moriarty said. “They are designing infrastructures for airports that are more supportive of things. When you do a project now, they are always future-proofing the technologies and the infrastructure.”

And what about the transportation trends Savoie and Moriarty see as a result of the ongoing pandemic? Savoie noticed airports looking at a more touchless experience, from when one enters the airport through check-in to boarding the plane. Moriarty added a lot more safety measures in place related to COVID-19, and that extends to the communications systems.

“We’ve been doing a lot more digital signage lately,” Moriarty said. “Integration is big into different systems and into different mass recipient systems to get information out to all the people. We’ve got some new software called Director that elevates the monitoring and the deployment of messages throughout the facilities.”

“Some of these efforts were brought about due to the pandemic. But it’s also the normal course of where transportation is going for five or six years now,” Savoie said.
