LISTEN: What happens to your data after you leave your rental car behind?

 

Did you know that your rental car could be one of the easiest ways for you personal information to be stolen? Privacy International is bringing to light the nuanced issue of smart phone data that is left in rental cars. Rental car infotainment systems can hold information such as your contacts, calendar data, driving history and more. However, neither the Car Manufacturers nor the Rental Car Companies will take responsibility for insuring this information is safe. Privacy International’s Graham Wood said, A lot of thinking needs to go on by both rental firms and car manufacturers about how they manage data and the duty of care they have to their customers.” Privacy International has approached a number of Rental Car companies and even the UK Information Commissioner’s Office in hopes to find a resolution to this issue.
