What You Need to Know About Fire Ratings

Whether building commercial or residential structures, building code specifies standards for fire ratings that include walk-in coolers and freezers. KPS Global® was an early adopter of safety protocols to provide superior products to our customers. A company’s manufacturing process speaks volumes as to how they do business. The quality control process asserted during manufacturing will determine the durability and performance of an insulated panel. The fabrication process, including how a panel is bonded to the insulation material impacts performance; if substandard processes are employed, panels can delaminate creating an unsafe environment in addition to reduced performance. Reputable panel manufacturers submit their products to the fire rating process.

The Fire Rating Process Explained

Companies submit their insulated panels to a 3rd party for burn ratings. A burn test provides two numbers: Flame Spread and Smoke Development. The 3rd party will only certify panels that fall below the threshold numbers for both categories. 3rd party testing measures surface burning characteristics, fire ratings for insulated panels and ceilings, and corner wall flammability to name a few categories. These tests ensure building materials will comply with safety standards in building codes.

Another key fire test relevant to industrial applications is FM 4880. The company’s lead engineer notes, “Factory Mutual certification is very challenging to obtain so we are very proud of achieving that certification. It provides several benefits to customers – namely insurance discounts”. KPSG makes several modifications to the manufacturing process to meet the strict guidelines set forth in FM 4880 so customers have to specify this requirement during the quoting process.

As the industry-leading manufacturer of insulated panel systems, KPS Global is proud to sell quality products that meet demanding safety requirements. To learn more about how KPS Global can provide your company with insulated panel solutions click here.
