Addressing the Environmental Debate Through an Uncommon Lens of Christian Faith, to Better Understand Climate Change

We are living in a period dominated by escalating discussions on climate change. The world continues to grapple with the daunting task of balancing our dependence on fossil fuels with the need to protect our environment. Climate change conversations have taken center stage in academic, political, and societal forums, sparking debates on its repercussions for the environment and the global economy. According to a study by NASA, the planet’s average surface temperature has risen by approximately 1.18 degrees Celsius since the late 19th century, largely driven by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere.

In a world facing escalating temperatures and environmental concerns, how can we understand the discourse around climate change through a unique perspective? How can the intersection of Christian faith, science, economics, and environmentalism contribute to this dialogue, as there continues to be growing calls for action?

On the latest episode of “Gasonomics,” host Tim Snyder is joined by a surprising guest – Dr. Cal Beisner, President of the Cornwall Alliance. Their  conversation examined climate change through a rarely observed intersection – that of Christian faith, science, economics, and environmental stewardship.

The two explored more on the topic and further discussed:

  • The role and goals of the Cornwall Alliance, a think tank consisting of evangelical Christian scholars across various disciplines including natural scientists, economists, and theologians, in addressing climate change.
  • Examination of comments made by John Kerry, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, regarding the implications of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and their interpretation through the lens of the Cornwall Alliance.
  • A holistic approach to understanding climate change that goes beyond just seeing it as an environmental issue, but as a complex challenge intertwined with socio-economic aspects, and the importance of sustainable development.

Dr. Cal Beisner is the President of the Cornwall Alliance, a network of nearly 70 evangelical Christian scholars focused on environmental and economic development issues from a Christian perspective. The organization advocates for the principles of stewardship, economic development, and biblical worldview in addressing environmental issues. Dr. Beisner has dedicated his career to bridging the gap between faith and environmental stewardship He utilizes his unique interdisciplinary knowledge to propose solutions rooted in sound science and economics.
