AIA Home Design Trends Survey Reveals That Economically Viable Projects Are At The Forefront of Kitchen Remodels

New data from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Home Design Trends Survey reveals the latest trends in kitchen and bathroom design. Homeowners continue to show strong demand for kitchen features like working pantries and outdoor kitchens, with induction cooking appliances rising in popularity. Upscale bathroom features such as larger walk-in showers, doorless showers, towel-warming drawers, and smart toilets are also in demand. There is growing interest in more accessible bathroom features like no-threshold showers.

However, AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker notes that homeowners are ensuring that these upgrades are economically viable given the current economic climate. There is caution due to high borrowing costs and uncertain future home prices.

The report further reveals weakened business conditions for residential architecture firms in the last quarter of 2022, with declining project billings, inquiries, and design contracts. Despite these trends, project backlogs remained near their all-time highs in Q4 of 2022. The survey represents the views of over 300 architecture firms focusing on residential projects.

Jack’s Thoughts:

“One of the simplest and most affordable ways to enhance your kitchen is by modifying your lighting. Many people often overlook the numerous lighting options available which can create different color effects. For instance, you can install fixtures that emit a warm sunset-like glow near seating areas.

In areas where tasks are performed, install bright, clear white light. Additionally, don’t forget about the possibility of installing dimmers. These allow for adaptable lighting conditions; bright for task-focused times, and dim for when you want to cultivate a more ambient atmosphere. Experiment with varying tones of light, like cool blue, warm sunset, or crisp task lighting.

Another cost-effective renovation is updating one or more of your light fixtures. This minor change can transform an area with minimal effort. A stunning pendant light above your kitchen island or dining area can dramatically alter the aesthetic and become a focal point in the room.

An emerging trend that is simple to implement involves installing lighting strips underneath your cabinets. This adds a new layer of illumination to spaces that are typically dark and overlooked. This small modification can greatly improve your kitchen’s ambiance.

Finally, while it may require a bit more effort, consider revamping your kitchen’s backsplash. New tiles, particularly when accented strategically, can add a burst of style to your kitchen. This can create a fresh appearance without necessitating significant changes. A colorful backsplash can enliven a kitchen with neutral cabinets, while a simple white backsplash can offset and balance cabinets with bolder colors. This enhancement can be completed within a day or two and offers an aesthetically pleasing transformation.”
