Compliance Officers are on Your Side

As COVID-19 rapidly changes the way we live and provide care, it becomes increasingly important for healthcare institutions to stay compliant with rules, regulations and safety protocols.

For Megan Nelson, Senior Compliance and Privacy Officer, Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging, her job helps keep healthcare institutions performing to the highest standards.

Nelson joined the podcast to talk about how she does her job, oversee her team and keeps everyone working toward keeping agencies in business providing healthcare.

“The only constant is change,” said Nelson, quoting Ben Franklin. The healthcare industry’s ever-changing rules, laws and regulations are no different, especially in the wake of a pandemic. As a registered nurse, Nelson stays abreast of policy through the Health Care Compliance Association.

But compliance is about more than just following the rules, Nelson said, arguing that compliance officers are not to be feared. Compliance officers share a desire with healthcare institutions to keep the agency providing help to as many people as possible.

“I derive no joy in giving someone a negative audit,” Nelson said. But by knowing her rules and regulations and working together with the healthcare providers in a trusted exchange, Nelson helps keep institutions providing their indispensable services.
