Assessing Storm Damage Risks and Tree Care Solutions
Storm Damage
In this video, we’ll be examining the aftermath of last night’s storm damage on a majestic red oak tree. ISA Certified Arborist Wesley Rivers takes us through the scene, showcasing the impact of the storm on the tree.
Behind ISA Certified Arborist Wesley, we see a large branch, approximately 12 inches in diameter, resting on the roof of a nearby garage. Another branch, about 10 inches in diameter, lies on the ground beside him. Wesley explains that the top branch broke off during the storm, causing a domino effect, as it took down the branch beneath it.
Drawing our attention to the broken branch, Wesley highlights the decay present on its end. He explains that the decay entered through an old pruning cut that failed to heal over time, leading to weakened wood and an increased likelihood of failure. The discoloration serves as evidence of this decay.
Moving on, Wesley points out another defective branch. The top of this branch also exhibits discoloration, indicating an old pruning cut that didn’t properly heal. He explains that the removal of this branch resulted in sunscald, visible as a light gray area on the limb resting on the roof.
Wesley then demonstrates an overextended branch, emphasizing its length and weight concentrated at the end. He explains that the greater the branch length and weight, the more strain it places on the attachment point. In this case, the weakened attachment failed, leaving a broken stub.
To mitigate such risks, Wesley suggests various measures. Structural pruning, end weight reduction, and the removal of defective branches are some of the solutions he recommends. By implementing these techniques, the risk of branch failure can be significantly reduced.
