Harnessing The Power Of Algae

With the world’s population increasing, energy demands are growing every day. However, the energy solution of the future might not be what you would expect. Researchers at the University of Cambridge has designed algae-powered full cells that are more powerful and cost effective than methods of the past. In order to accomplish this, the team genetically modified the cells of algae plants to be more efficient during the process of photosynthesis. “This a big step forward in the search for alternative, greener fuels,” says Dr Paolo Bombelli, from the Department of Biochemistry. “We believe these developments will bring algal-based systems closer to practical implementation.” Though they won’t have enough power to take over your energy provider, this innovation in green energy is the perfect solution for areas like rural Africa, with low energy needs and plenty of sunlight to power the cells.
