Online Learning Minute: How Gamification Increases Student Engagement in Online Learning

Gamification can increase student engagement in online learning. On this episode of Marketscale’s Online Learning Minute, host Brian Runo discussed how to gamify courses effectively.

Drawing a distinction between creating a game and fitting a course into it versus creating a course and implementing gamification theories, Runo suggested the latter.

For example, Runo described the use of a ranking system or badges for online courses. When students complete a module, they earn some sort of recognition as they would for completing a level in a game.

In another example, Runo suggested pitting students against one another to compete for who engages most. He recommended searching the topic “Northwestern discussion hero,” for further examples and insights.
