How to Identify and Tackle the Challenges of Modern Automation and Robotics Systems

Automation and robotics usage is accelerating industrial settings. While the automotive industry was the first to capitalize, others are following suit.

However, that doesn’t mean that challenges don’t exist. Taking a deep dive on the topic, Beyond the Concept host Daniel Litwin welcomed guest Dominic Fiutek, Account Manager for the Western Region at Güdel, a global manufacturer of high-precision machine components and strategic partner of Concept Systems.

Kicking off the chat was a question about metrics to determine the utility of a robot. “We work with integrators to define metrics for the end user thart are typically defined by repeatability,” Fiutek explained.

For robotics to have maximum utility, it’s all about their duty cycle, which is dependent on the space and the ability to use one robot to do multiple things.

“Before, one robot was for one application. Now, it can be for several like assembly and welding when it uses a track or gantry. You can also have multiple robots,” Fiutek said.

The advantages of using automation and robotics are more visible to different types of industrial uses. Manufacturers adopted them to maximize production but also cure the bottleneck of labor shortages.
“In the past year, some companies ceased production if it was all manual. Robotics and automation are a supplement to scale up to full production,” Fiutek noted.

Robots are a new option to deliver benefits for a wide range of end-users. Moving heavy pieces is foundational and all about strength, speed and accuracy. Fiutek mentioned that gantry helps with this. “With overhead, vertical, and floor gantries, robots can better maneuver. Gantries are also easy to configure and use. The biggest challenge right now is the messy environments that robots work in, but there are solutions to this with the right setup and integrator.”

Transportation Management Systems Don’t Compete With Carriers, Brokers, or Shippers — They Align Them
February 10, 2026

Transportation management systems are undergoing a quiet but consequential shift. Once viewed primarily as tools for tracking loads and storing paperwork, modern TMS platforms are increasingly expected to function as the operational backbone of logistics organizations. As freight volumes continue to fluctuate, margins remain tight, and supply chains rely on a growing mix of…

Five by Five Leadership: Why Purpose, Warmth, and Clarity Matter More Than Ever at Work
February 10, 2026

For the first time in history, workplaces now span five generations, forcing leaders to rethink long-standing assumptions about motivation, communication, and career growth. As Gen Z enters the workforce, they bring expectations shaped by a desire for meaningful work, clear development paths, and work-life balance—rather than traditional, one-size-fits-all career ladders. In an era marked…

Scaling Experiential Learning at Slippery Rock University with Dr. John Rindy
February 9, 2026

Regional public universities are being asked to do more with fewer students, fewer dollars, and less margin for error—making student persistence, timely graduation, and career outcomes central institutional concerns. Under mounting enrollment pressure and a shifting labor market, experiential learning has moved from a “nice to have” to a strategic imperative. Research consistently shows…

The Next Data Center Bottleneck Isn’t Power or Cooling — It’s People: The Data Center Workforce
February 8, 2026

With the rapid rise of AI workloads, data centers are being built with higher power density, stricter reliability expectations, and cooling technologies that are evolving faster than most teams can adapt. As a result, these facilities aren’t just getting bigger—they’re becoming harder to operate, harder to staff, and far less forgiving when something goes…
