HIMSS 2023: With 80% of Medical Data Going Unutilized, Experts Say the Solution Is Better Data Visibility

Data, data everywhere, but not a byte to use? The healthcare industry is currently sitting on a goldmine of untapped potential in the form of unstructured medical big data. As we head into HIMSS 2023, the premier healthcare conference, industry leaders are set to showcase innovative solutions for harnessing this valuable resource and improving data exchange in healthcare.

At HIMSS 2023, healthcare professionals, CIOs, government officials, and consultants alike will have the opportunity to learn about advancements in big data and data exchange in healthcare technologies. With approximately 80% of medical data going unutilized, solutions such as data exchange platforms and intelligent data extraction are crucial for maximizing the benefits of digital healthcare. HIMSS 2023 will also feature specialty pavilions, including those focusing on patient engagement, cybersecurity, and interoperability, providing attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the latest healthcare technologies.

Mark Pratt, Chief Medical Officer of Altera Digital Health, Inc., believes that the advancements in healthcare technology, particularly in artificial intelligence, have the potential to transform patient care and provide doctors with better information at the point of care.

Mark’s Thoughts:

“Our company Altera Digital Health, is a new company that we’ve established under Harris Healthcare.

So that’s one of the things we’re excited about announcing here at HIMSS. Also excited to just see people talking about the advancements in healthcare technology. So, especially around artificial intelligence, what people are doing with that. It’s just a really exciting time to be in healthcare because, traditionally, healthcare’s been behind the rest of the industry and technology.

And I think this really demonstrates how we’ve really moved along with bringing that technology into the patient’s world.”

“I think we’ll see a lot of challenges around how we’re going to deal with artificial intelligence. There’s been multiple conversations about, how can this transform what we’re doing with the patient. How can this give doctors better information at the point of care?

So I think there’s going to be a lot of challenges ethically from a governance standpoint and how we’re managing all of that data. The sources of where that data’s coming from. I think that there’s going to be a lot of challenges ahead of us to figure out what to do with that. I would agree there.”

“Getting the data from all the different places where a patient can get care. That’s still one of the biggest challenges, I think, in healthcare, and I think we’re, we’re really making good progress towards being able to share that data across all of the EHRs. And so, in the end, that really helps the patient because the providers need that information to take the best care of the patient possible. And the easier we can make that for them, the better for the patient.”
