 Despite the growth of credit cards and other electronic payment methods, a significant segment of the U.S. population still prefers to pay for goods and services in cash. Many patients are finding that they can even receive substantial discounts when they pay for their medical care in cash. The Wall Street Journal, for example, recently shared the story of a patient who received an X-ray for $70 by paying cash upfront instead of the $600 it would cost her by submitting a claim using her high-deductible insurance policy. This cash option may increasingly appeal to patients as many are enrolled in high deductible insurance plans where they pay for more of their medical services out of pocket. This trend benefits urgent care centers, as well. If a patient is willing to pay at the point of service, the urgent care center receives the funds immediately instead of waiting 30 to 60 days for a claim to be processed with an insurance company.
