Instagram Threads 101 for B2B Marketers

Yesterday marked the launch of Instagram Threads, a new social media platform that has already made waves in the digital world. This direct alternative to Twitter has seen an unprecedented response, with over 30 million users signing up on the first day alone.

What is Instagram Threads?

Instagram Threads is a text-based social media platform tied to your Instagram account. This means you can create a Threads account by logging in with your Instagram credentials. This feature is a game-changer as it allows your follower list from Instagram to carry over, eliminating the need to start from scratch.

How is Threads Different?

Unlike Twitter, Threads currently has no paid tiers or ads. Your verification mark from Instagram carries over, allowing users to take advantage of their existing Instagram network. However, it’s worth noting that Threads does not yet have Twitter-like features such as long video, direct messages, and live audio rooms.

Using Threads

Threads is currently available on iOS and Android in more than 100 countries. Users can post up to 500 characters in one post, and each post supports images, videos, and GIFs, with up to 10 media items. You can view Thread posts and profiles on the web through a link, but currently, you can’t log in and make posts from the web.

The Launch of Threads

The launch of Threads was nothing short of spectacular. Within two hours of pressing the launch button, more than two million people had downloaded the app. By the end of the day, the number of downloads had soared to 10 million, and by the next morning, the app had been downloaded more than 30 million times.

This rapid adoption rate has led some to believe that Threads could become the most rapidly downloaded app ever, outstripping even the likes of ChatGPT, the chatbot, which was downloaded one million times within its first five days.

The Future of Threads

The early success of Threads underscores people’s desire for an alternative to Twitter. The platform has already attracted some of Twitter’s most-followed users, including Ellen DeGeneres, Bill Gates, Shakira, and Oprah Winfrey, who have joined Threads and begun posting.

Despite the early success, this is just the beginning for Threads. As the platform evolves, we can expect more features to be added and the platform to roll out its monetization plan. The atmosphere is celebratory, with users writing welcome messages and expressing eagerness to read one another’s posts.

Instagram Threads has made a strong start in the social media landscape. Its unique features and the ability to carry over your Instagram followers give it a competitive edge. As Threads continues to evolve and add more features, it will be interesting to see how it shapes the future of social media.
