Germany Kicks Off Post-Pandemic Soccer: Business Casual

When compared to other countries, Germany was surprisingly swift in rolling out widespread coronavirus testing, and today, the nation is admired for its success in containing one of the modern world’s worst pandemics. As the country gradually withdraws from its self-imposed isolation, one monumental move forward is being eagerly anticipated by soccer fans across the planet, including Business Casual host Tyler Kern. The Bundesliga, Germany’s professional association football league, has finally been cleared to return, making it the first of soccer’s major leagues to try and mount a comeback from the COVID-19-induced global sporting stoppage. While the Bundesliga boasts the highest average stadium attendance worldwide, in the post-pandemic world, however, the teams scheduled to play tomorrow, Saturday, May 16th, will be playing in empty stadiums—meaning fans must hunker down in front of the telly to cheer on their favorite teams.

A significant event with impacts that will affect the sporting industry around the globe, on this Business Casual segment, Kern discusses with co-host Daniel Litwin how the Bundesliga’s return will offer a glimpse of what top-level sports will look like not only in these unusual times, but also as we move forward into the new normal. Kern and Litwin break down:

The league’s creative method of promoting fan enthusiasm while generating revenues
An empty stadium’s bearing on the player psyche
German economics and how it relates to team ownership
